Peter Quill is still an arrogant jackass of a man-child.

A lot of Quill’s immature, “man-child” behavior stems form the fact he never had a stable parental figure. Especially during more of his formative years. His mother died when he was 8 years old and then he was abducted by this guy:

I mean how was Quill supposed to turn out? 

Given his upbringing, it’s a miracle he has somewhat a head on his shoulders at all, but we’ve seen all sorts of wonderful characteristics demonstrated by Quill: loyalty, selflessness, compassion, and solid critical thinking skills (how many of his plans have actually worked? Virtually all of them). Quill’s the reason the Guardians exist at all.

Yes, he’s impulsive and emotional, but he has a lot of psychological scar tissue. That shit doesn’t just go away. Especially when you’re a half-human raised by a mercenary light-years away from the nearest mental health facility.
