Hm. Okay. Well let me tell you what I would have LIKED to
see from Pacific Rim: Uprising…
Mako Mori is the new leader of the jaeger program. The rift is closed but the
program still endures because jaegers are now being used to repair coastal
cities all over the world. It’s a huge undertaking but they are happy to do it
to restore the life that once lived there.
Raleigh is there with her and they are a KICKASS married
team. None of that sequel = marital issues trope, folks. No, they are STRONGER than ever and are commanding in front of their team but give each
other little giddy side glances when they back each other up the whole movie
like GOSH I’m glad I married you!
But UH OH the Kaiju come back for no other reason than they opened
a rift the first time and they can do it again.
Newt and Hermann are called back in for advising from
Germany, where they’ve been living together. No one in the movie outright
states that they’re totally lovers and Hermann insists that it’s purely for the
convenience of his research but like, again, Mako and Raleigh do a little
knowing side glance thing at each other and it’s cute. The audience GETS IT.
A new team of jaeger pilots gears up to fight the second
round of Kaiju. They are adults and of every gender, sexuality, ethnicity, etc. There’s a black lesbian pilot whose jaeger partner is a trans man. There’s
an asexual asian pilot whose jaeger partner is a deaf girl with vitiligo. You
name it, we got it. It’s satisfying. Is this me asking for too much? No.
At one point in the movie Newt reveals he’s made a device
that can temporarily control a kaiju’s nervous system (not its brain so they can’t
control them all though a hive mind, bummer) but they COULD gain control of one’s body for a few moments.
In the heat of battle all jaeger pilots are occupied
fighting kaiju and Herc is like “we just gotta get that device to Mako &
Raleigh somehow, who else has drift experience?” And like it’s cute that Hermann
rolls his eyes like ‘…oh no’ and smash cut to him and Newt geared up in a spare
jaeger for a hot second just to deliver the device to Mako. A bit of comedy
there.
Anyway, the jaegers do an amazing job fighting, there’s a
cool scene where Mako and Raleigh use the controlling device to make a
kaiju fight a kaiju and the team ends up closing the rift and this time it
STAYS CLOSED because instead of throwing a bomb in there they do the OPPOSITE
and start a black hole or some shit that destroys the aliens’ whole planet.
The movie ends where everybody celebrates and like in the
background you see like the lesbian kisses her
partner and other nice stuff for the fans.
Good movie, everything ends happily. And there’s not a third
one because I’m not giving them another chance to mess anything else up.
