early into the five year mission spock is still getting used to the crew being so open with their emotions and one time spock is kinda tired and maybe his mental shields aren’t so strongly in place because it’s been a long day and they’ve been fighting all week
but jim is talking to him and offhandly makes a joke that’s just very cute and jim-like and in a moment of fondness spock trips up and chuckles a bit and before even realizing his mistake he looks at jim, who’s just open mouthed staring at him and has this Look on his face and he’s a bit embarrassed about his slip but after a few seconds jim just gasps out “you have the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen, spock” and spock doesn’t think his face has ever gotten so hot and that’s the first step forward into thinking maybe these human emotions aren’t all bad
