in greek mythology, psyche was a beautiful princess who became a goddess when she married the god of love, eros. aphrodite, the goddess of love, had commanded eros make psyche fall in love with the most hideous of men but the god fell in love with her instead. in ancient mosaic art, psyche was depicted as a butterfly-winged woman.
