Not to lesbian purity or something but there are some narratives you can’t ABSOLUTELY write m/m aus of. Revolutionary girl utena? The handmaiden? They are stories centered around the abuse and violence men uphold on women and women finding freedom in the love between them how can you find it appropriate in the slightest to write m/m angst of it??
TBH yeah that’s not okay guys stop
Not that I’m doubting the OP or the 1000+ people who’ve reblogged this post, but I’m kind of baffled that this is a common enough phenomenon that people are making annoyed posts about it? I mean, like, I’ll believe any fanfic concept has been done once, but as a frequent or at least regularish thing? And why were these people even watching The Handmaiden if they’re not that interested in f/f?
yes, its an unfortunately common thing.
Also because they are men or straight women who see nice lesbian story about escaping men’s abuse and think “mmmmm better make it about men”

A The Handmaiden!AU for Utena or a Utena!AU for The Handmaiden would be way better anyway and it’s a shame no one has done it

So yes, OP, I agree with you. Not that mlm takes on this kind of narratives would be bad, because there are things to say about the abuse gay men face or even men in general because of the rules they impose on themselves. It’s simply that doing so fundamentally changes what Revolutionary Girl Utena and The Handmaiden were trying to convey.

It could also expand on the hypocrisy of these sexual predators that will be unashamed homophobes while raping boys (they sadly exist). You could tell any of these stories with AUs of RGU and The Handmaiden but it just wouldn’t be the same. Because these two shows focus not only on queer girls but on the struggle they face in a misogynistic society that expect them to depend on a man. Also the sexual abuse women in general simply face more than men.

I think anyone could really, but it will lessen the story’s message and importance, or even change it … You could make a mlm AU of Utena but then it would mean focusing on the figure of the Prince, and expectations placed on boys because of Toxic Masculinity. The show already does, it’s busy not the main focus. Boys have been sexually harassed by powerful men as long as women have and you could tell a story about it with a mlm AU of The Handmaiden.
