story idea: in a futuristic society where people can and regularly do modify their bodies with cybernetic implants designed to enhance their lifestyle (or for purely cosmetic purposes), an anonymous individual hacks into the software controlling these devices and uses it to assault and murder their selected victims by manipulating their augments, essentially holding the entire population hostage. since the law enforcement agencies are reluctant to act in case their own implants are triggered as a result, a brave and dedicated group of people from various backgrounds and professions to band together to try to find a motive behind the crimes and stop this terrorist despite the risk they also pose to them.

in a surprising twist, the story ends not with a moral message about today’s society’s over reliance on technology, but a criticism of those who abuse a system designed to help people and enable them to access opportunities that would have otherwise have been barred to them, in order to fulfil a narrow-minded “vision” that excludes entire groups based on petty and unjustified reasoning, corporations who cut corners in their product design in order to generate higher profits, despite the risks this may pose to customers buying the product, and those intended to protect society from such people who are willing to ignore the problem as long as it doesn’t affect them, or even work with the perpetrators if it benefits their own interests.
