the reason that the bad writing, especially regarding mischaracterizations, in tlj is a real problem and not just something fandom is making up is because when you look at regular fans (people who like star wars and have seen the movies but don’t obsessively think/blog about it etc) their opinions towards certain characters have drastically changed since the force awakens
after tfa poe was tons of people’s new favorite star wars character. Now we’re seeing buzzfeed ““thinkpieces”” on how he’s worse than jar jar. On twitter today i saw some journalist call him a “fuckboy.” Poe dameron? a fuckboy? POE??
after tfa there was a ton of stuff about how rey is a #girlpower kickass feminist hero etc who doesn’t need a man. Now i’m seeing more reylo shippers than ever before, and the ship being mentioned by name in articles on popular websites (whereas before it seemed to mostly only exist as a named concept within the bad corners of the star wars fandom on tumblr)
finn? the breakout star of the force awakens and new male lead of star wars? i’m barely seeing him mentioned online anywhere but by the finn stans i follow here. Hmmm maybe that’s what happens when you sideline a character from the plain plot and give him a narrative that isn’t particularly interesting or important
anyway, the bad characterizations in the last jedi aren’t just something tumblr fandom is inventing out of thin air. You can tell something has changed just by the way star wars fans outside of tumblr are talking about these characters very differently than they did two years ago
