yeah i agree like… there are definitely bits of it that make it painfully obvious it’s a teenager’s first novel, but it has a fairly coherent plot, an established magic system with realistic rules and consequences which are pretty much always followed up on and pose a genuine challenge to the protagonist despite his inherent talents, and a range of characters each with individual arcs and motivations that mostly reach a satisfying conclusion by the end of the series, just to name a few things.

• they were lovers before the fall milton said angels could have sex in his 12 book long fanfiction so ive decided this is allowed when beelzebub was still an angel, however beelzebub grew bored with the constancy of life in heaven and when they started hanging out with lucifer they hid this from gabriel because they knew he was loyal to god and wouldn’t understand, and assumed that he’d try to talk them out of it, so by the time of the fall they were drifting apart on different paths

• they fought one another in the rebellion, much like how michael fought lucifer, because they both felt bitter about one another and their relationship at that stage. gabriel was angry that beelzebub hadn’t trusted him and had lied to him (even though they were right about him trying to talk them out of it if he had known) and beelzebub was upset because they felt stifled by life in heaven and saw gabriel as a personification of that gilded cage lifestyle. gabriel didn’t cast them out of heaven personally (none of the angels did - god took care of that part), but being the one to confront and subsequently drive them firmly over to the other side in battle meant he was basically responsible for their fall anyway.

• neither of them remember each other - not entirely, anyway. beelzebub lost most of their memories of heaven, much like the other demons, due to the impact of the fall, and gabriel chose to suppress the memories of beelzebub because they were so painful. they both have scraps of memory left and a vague sense of familiarity with one another, kind of like in eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, but can’t connect them to form a coherent picture.

• after armageddidn’t they both end up spending some time on earth due to unrest in heaven and hell. beelzebub chooses to leave dagon in charge to keep order and avoid a rebellion challenging their leadership after what happened with crowley (since hell is a place where any perceived weakness is exploited and seen as an opportunity to attempt to depose someone and take their place) and gabriel is advised by the michael to step down for a decade or so until things are cleared up or forgotten because, though it’s not explicitly stated, many of the angels are doubting his leadership skills. they end up running into each other regularly due to reasons neither of them can understand (it’s their recognition of each other’s presence and suppressed memories driving them to seek each other out subconsciously, but they don’t realize that) and end up deciding to stick together to cope with adapting to life on earth, since they’ll both be stuck there for a while.

• they start to grudgingly learn to coexist with humanity and even appreciate some of their inventions, although they still consider them inferior to angels and demons. they also begin to understand aziraphale and crowley’s behavior and why they were so interested in preventing armageddon, although they still hate them.

• the more time they spend together, the more of their lost memories of one another they begin to recall, which leaves them feeling confused about their relationship to one another. there’s still bitterness, though, due to the circumstances of their ‘breakup’.
