honestly no single scene in cinematic history will ever have as devastating an emotional impact as “i can’t carry it for you…but i can carry you!”

Middle Earth meme | [5/6] friendships Frodo and Sam

↳    - I wonder if people will ever say, “Let’s hear about Frodo and the Ring,” and they’ll say, “Yes, that’s one of my favorite stories. Frodo was really courageous, wasn’t he, Dad?” “Yes, my boy, the most famousest of hobbits. And that’s saying a lot.”
- You left out one of the chief characters: Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam. Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam.

People give Frodo a hard time for his fixation on the ring (which is dumb) including the scene where Sam has the ring and he’s asking for it back. Yeah, Frodo wants the ring because he’s grown attached to it. That’s obvious. That happens to literally everyone who comes in contact with the ring. Even Sam momentarily didn’t want to give it up.

But I think people ignore the fact that Frodo also didn’t want Sam to carry it, even temporarily, because he didn’t want Sam to suffer as he was suffering. When Sam gives the ring back to Frodo, Frodo says “It would destroy you, Sam.” Frodo was protecting Sam by not letting him have it. Frodo would rather suffer the ring than watch Sam go through the pain of carrying it. And Sam recognized this. That’s why he threw Frodo on his back and carried him rather than carrying the ring.

Of course Frodo was attached to the ring and that played into this as well, but he was also protecting Sam and people tend to ignore that.

I love him. He’s like that, and sometimes it shines through, somehow.
But I love him, whether or no.
