Friendly reminder that in Faramir’s youth, Gandalf became a mentor and father figure to him where Denethor had failed. Denethor becomes resentful of this, shunning both and insisting that his son had become a “wizard’s pupil.”

Not only is it likely that Faramir’s obvious preference for lore over battle was inspired by Gandalf, it is also reasonable to assume that his personality was [to some extent at least] also a product of the wizard’s. Gandalf was the patron Maia of Nienna, the Lady of Pity. It seems only fitting that he would become a mentor to someone who Tolkien described as being “moved sooner to pity than to scorn.”
