Christopher Plummer (Hamlet) Michael Caine (Horatio) 1964
I read somewhere that the actors stated they played them as intentionally romantic and I have never smiled more widely I’m afraid
Oh yea, they absolutely did. In fact, Michael Cain (Horatio) was warned against taking the part by a producer BECAUSE Christopher Plummer (Hamlet) and the director wanted to play up the homoerotic nature of the relationship.
He took it anyway.
The movie (Hamlet At Elsinore) has been posted to YouTube in its entirety if you want to check it out yourself.

I know a lot about love. I’ve seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate… It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves… You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful.

But the horror, the horror was for love. The things we do for love like this are ugly, mad, full of sweat and regret. This love burns you and maims you, and twists you inside out. It is a monstrous love and it makes monsters of us all.
