boggles the mind that some people think nona the ninth was extraneous or should have been cut or from a different pov. like if you didnt like the book, word, i wont try to make you, but it was done with such specific intent in regards to the story! the whole point was to spend all that time with nona, to know her and love her, and then juggle that alongside all of the previous knowledge we have of alecto as a horrible inhuman monster. we see nona is humanity - she knows nothing but the joy of living, she understands the languages and truths of all of her children innately, and she is intimately concerned with the struggles of every individual, right down to little kids named hot sauce and kevin. we have to spend time with her to know that she can be this beautiful, wonderful thing, and understand that john killed her ruthlessly, all in pursuit of his nonsensical quest for revenge, and brought her back vile and corrupted. johns imperialist vision of the houses is tainted, but nona thrives on new rho - she says she loves it and wouldn’t want to leave, because the people are there, untouched by necromancy and johns ideologies. nona the ninth is all about laying out johns hypocrisy and megalomania in explicit detail, and spending time loving what he has tried to destroy and twist to his agendas, so that we can feel that grief sharpened and personified into the pinpoint of losing nona, and we know just exactly why his actions were abhorrent, and why everyone he loved has tried to kill him.
