just saw a post arguing that the batman (2022) demonizes the radical left because the riddler Had Some Points about corruption in gotham and, like, bestie idk how to tell you this but the riddler is not a leftist. yes he was mad about corruption and the maroni bust being faked and his shitty childhood but… he put targets on the backs of sex workers. the way he talked about martha’s family history of mental illness was extremely ableist, and he went after bruce not because bruce or his parents personally did anything to him but because the riddler thinks he’s the main character of the real world and settling his beef is more important than fixing the city. he’s not exposing these people to help anyone, he’s doing it for vengeance and to show how special and smart he is so his crush (batman) will notice him
there is a dangerous tendency among some leftists to view any sort of radical action taken against the state as a good thing even when it’s EXTREMELY clear that the underlying motivations behind those actions are fascist. like the riddler is a fascist. he demonizes sex workers and the mentally ill and his problem with society’s structure isn’t that it’s unjust; it’s that he himself is not at the top of it. he used textbook right wing stochastic terrorist methods to orchestrate a mass shooting that specifically targeted an afro-latina politician who was clearly a stand-in for the young leftist female politicians the right loves to demonize. as an anarchist myself i have plenty of critiques about the way the movie’s only examples of radicalism are kneejerk vengeance that make liberal reform with more equitable social policies look like the best option, plus that #NotAllCops shit, but good lord people use some critical thinking
anyway the op of that post was a terf because of course they were
