It’s a dangerous business … going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.

I feel like we don’t talk enough about how book!Bilbo’s main motivation for going on the adventure is SPITE
Book!Bilbo is anti-adventure until he overhears the dwarves mocking him for being a coward. At which point he thinks:
“The Took side had won. He suddenly felt he would go without without bed or breakfast to be thought fierce. As for ‘little fellow bobbing on the mat’ it made him really fierce…..”
Because Bilbo can say “I’m too cowardly for this journey’ about himself, but when another person says it about him– that’s different!!!
And then he tells the dwarves:‘‘You think i am no good….. I am quite sure you have come to the wrong house. But treat it as the right one. Tell me what you want done, and I will try it, if I have to walk from here to East of the East and fight the Wild Were-Worms in the Last Desert.”
He’s all “I can’t do this’’ until the dwarves are like ‘’yeah you can’t’ at which point he just flips out like “What, you think I’m not good enough? Well you’re wrong! In fact I’m TOO good for this adventure!! I COULD STRANGLE 10 DRAGONS WITH MY BARE HANDS, TRY ME.’’

“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”
