I definitely wanted to do a movie that started with this sense of invasion — this sense of the fear of other, the fear of the stranger from outside, which I think is a common fear in society these days — and then sort of force the characters to realize the invaders have their faces.
I didn’t want to make just a home invasion, though I utilized that imagery. I wanted the sense of an adventure that was not necessarily a claustrophobic one — that’s a feeling that turns me off watching. I wanted to make this expansive, I wanted it to have themes of night and day.
I watched Us and I normally don’t watch horror… I’ve already seen this twice. I had such a great time, the score was incredible and the acting was stunning.
I felt so inspired to get this down as soon as I watched it the first time.
“The performances [in ‘Us’] are uniformly fantastic, but I was most impressed by Wright and Nyong’o, both delivering distinct and completely unique work. Nyong’o gives a masterclass in acting in dual roles and is almost unrecognizable as her doppelgänger persona. Not only does she take on an entirely different voice, but her posture, movements and facial expressions are a different individual entirely. At times, I had to remind myself that this was the same woman; that’s just how good she is.”
